TMS for OCD
For those living with OCD, intrusive thoughts and compulsive behaviors can take over daily life. If medications and therapy have not worked, or you feel like you have not made progress, TMS offers a new path forward.

At Integrative Psychiatry, we use NeuroStar TMS, an FDA-cleared treatment for OCD to target the specific brain circuits involved in obsessive-compulsive behavior.
How TMS Works for OCD
OCD symptoms are linked to hyperconnectivity in the cortico-striatal-thalamo-cortical (CSTC) circuit. NeuroStar TMS uses precisely guided magnetic pulses to modulate this network, helping reduce obsessive thoughts and compulsive urges.

Treatment involves:
-
A mapping session to locate the anterior cingulate cortex
-
5 sessions per week over several weeks
-
Gradual improvement tracked over time

OCD can be persistent, but studies show TMS can make a measurable difference:

-
38% of patients saw a ≥30% reduction in Y-BOCS (Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale) scores after treatment
-
Over 50% of patients experienced meaningful improvement when completing the full NeuroStar OCD protocol
-
Minimal side effects, with no cognitive impairment or need for sedation
Supporting Adolescents with OCD
While official clearance is for adults, many providers, including our team, may consider TMS for younger patients in select cases, especially when traditional interventions are not effective. Every adolescent case is reviewed carefully to ensure the safest, most appropriate care.
Adult Indications for Use
The NeuroStar Advanced Therapy System is indicated for the treatment of depressive episodes and for decreasing anxiety symptoms for those who may exhibit comorbid anxiety symptoms in adult patients suffering from Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and who failed to achieve satisfactory improvement from previous antidepressant medication treatment in the current episode.
The NeuroStar Advanced Therapy System is intended to be used as an adjunct for the treatment of adult patients suffering from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).
Adolescent Indications for Use
NeuroStar Advanced Therapy is indicated as an adjunct for the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) in adolescent patients (15-21).
Important Safety Information
NeuroStar Advanced Therapy is only available by prescription. A doctor can help decide if NeuroStar Advanced Therapy is right for you. Patients’ results may vary.
The most common side effect is pain or discomfort at or near the treatment site. These events are transient; they occur during the TMS treatment course and do not occur for most patients after the first week of treatment. There is a rare risk of seizure associated with the use of TMS therapy (<0.1% per patient).
